Assignment#5

About Chapter 8

I think finding something to celebrate and something to laugh about is important even when we feel gloomy, but we should not depend on this strategy too much in some situation. I mean that we should not use this strategy in order to escape from the reality.

In Shackleton's case, the strategy worked in a good way. Shackleton and his crews understood the living condition was worse but they continued to have the spirit of celebration. Their commitment to celebration was the way to cheer themselves up. It created an upbeat mood and gave them power to survive. It is certain that laughing is good for both physical and mental health.

But finding something to celebrate with ignoring problems in the reality should be avoided. It is just escaping from bad things, and postpones the resolution. We have to understand that celebrating small things is completely different from not looking at bad things.

  1. I agree with you. While reading this chapter, I also thought of same thing. As you say, celebrating is important to make the atmosphere good, but if it leads to escape from the reality, it's meaningless. Being a good leader is difficult!!

  2. Hum ^^, its a interesting view! I agree with it. There is a Chinese philosophy i heard recently. In KanJi it will be like"得意当然、失意泰然". Keke, hard to understand, don't you? Well, it means, especially for a leader. When there is a small victory, don't take the initiative to celebrate it since you don't think it's enough for a strong team. When there is a accident, don't think it's a deal, but worry at home. Taking initiative to solve it, and start from you. Basically, It might go well with your opinion. And, thank you for your blogging^^ see you class!

  3. Hi Sayaka,

Really good point! It's a little like what someone said in class (maybe Shu) about how some people are good at cheering us up but they can't be joking all the time or we might feel like we are not being taken seriously.

I think it was the same for Shackleton. The situation for all of them was so obviously bad, that they desperately needed at times to take their minds away from the badness of it. It wasn't that he was ignoring the problems as we know from his other many actions.

    Good thoughts. Thanks.
